RECIPES FROM THE PAST: BAKED BEANS

An easy favorite for any picnic or gathering.

                                                   BAKED BEANS

An appropriate recipe for this time of year when back yard or family picnics require everyone to bring a dish to add to the fun. This recipe I took from a PA Dutch cook book many years ago, at least 60, and it been around much longer than that. A great dish to add to a cookout, easy and economical, too.

BAKED BEANS

  • 1 lb. pack of  dried beans
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 Tbsp. brown sugar
  • ½ tsp. mustard
  • 1/8 cup molasses
  • 1/2 bottle ketchup
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1/4lb bacon

Soak & cook beans until soft . Place beans in pot. Add sugar, molasses, onion, salt and mustard. Cut bacon into small pieces & stir into beans.

Add ketchup and water to taste. Cover pot & place in oven 250  for about 4 hours.( Works well in crock pot)
