In the months since I had finally begun to fall asleep before the wee hours of the morning, I filled a notebook with3 inch Zentangle tiles. In that time I found myself improving in my handwriting. MY family no longer accused me of being impossible to read. What a relief!. I also began seeing that I was no longer simply following the repetitive lines but I began to be more creative. It led me back to drawing and putting actual pictures on larger tiles. You will find other possibilities from that one attempt at reaching out to get help. It is mostly created by the stress in our lives STRESS can drive you to not thinking too clearly, to making the wrong decisions, and just feel miserable about a condition you cannot give reason to or to change at all. As a care giver to my husband in the assaults of dementia, I ran the gamut of that stress, about not being patient enough, not understanding enough, or not being physically able to cope with the demands I had most willingly assumed. My stress induced the sleepless nights that ill prepared me for facing the next predictable day.
Family always rose to help me. My daughter had been reading about the benefits of Zentangle in reducing stress and she produced a starter kit for me to try. The basic theory is that the repetitive drawing on three inch paper tiles could help eliminate and channel your inner stress through relaxation. What did I have to lose, except frustrated pillow time?
The first night I tried to be creative but found that simpler was better. I did several of the tiles and spent another sleepless night. The second night I concentrated on the repetition rather than how nice it looked. It was as though I had a magical transformation. For the first time in ages I felt refreshed when I awoke, ready to face the challenges of a new day.
